| I don't think any athlete I've ever watched or covered has driven me more nuts than Sheed. Maybe it's because he can be so good. Maybe it's because some suggest he's talented enough to be one of the greatest players of all time. And maybe it's because his ardent backers are always telling me that I just don't "understand" him. |

| People tend to roll their eyes at the mention of Kwame Brown. By signing him as a free agent, the Pistons opened themselves up to all kinds of potshots and criticism.
Brown has been a colossal bust since Washington made him the first high school player to be the top overall pick in 2001. He also passed through the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies organizations before the Pistons took a chance and signed him to a two-year, $8 million contract that includes a player option. |

Their first meeting against the team that knocked them out of the Eastern Conference Finals follows shortly thereafter as they face defending champion Boston on Sunday, Nov. 9 at The Palace. They will also play at Boston 11 nights later. |

| When new Pistons center Kwame Brown arrives at camp in October, he's going to be a lot lighter. We're not talking body weight. Brown will no longer be carrying around the oppressive weight of lofty expectation. |

|
| Kwame Brown hopes to be the latest player to resurrect his career with the Detroit Pistons.
The Washington Wizards drafted the 6-foot-11 center No. 1 overall out of high school in 2001, but he was tagged as an underperformer early in his NBA career, and he's played for three teams in seven seasons, averaging just 7.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.
"The past is the past," Brown said during a conference call Tuesday. "I'm not going to disrespect my new teammates or my organization by making excuses. |

So it wasn't surprising when the Pistons announced Tuesday they had exercised their team options for Stuckey and fellow guard Arron Afflalo, extending their contracts through the 2009-10 season. |

|
| Expectations are low for the newest Piston, Kwame Brown. The hype that surrounded him when the Washington Wizards made him the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NBA draft is long gone. And Brown says that low profile might just be the ticket to help him in his journey from bust to solid contributor. |

| Maybe you can blame it on the weak dollar -- or the fact that they aren't very good -- but a few players are leaving the NBA to play with teams overseas. |

| They certainly haven't "earned" that right. Dumars has every right to break the core up. This group has been given plenty of chances and has wasted them away. If they had left it all on the floor against the Celtics in June, I might re-think that. But don't we all feel like the Pistons had the upper hand after Game 2. |
|
|
|
| Am I supposed to be outraged by the Kwame signing? Am I supposed to lambaste the Pistons for spending money on a malcontent who has never panned out? Sorry, I just don't think it's that big a deal. Detroit took a flier on a big man who has some ability and has never come through in the league. If they hit on something, it's a bonus. If they don't, it's no real loss and they can sit him on the bench and trade him when the season is over. |
