| After two Team USA summers where Carmelo was arguably one of their best and most dominant players, Carmelo appears to be struggling this summer in the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
While nearly everyone on the roster cruised during Team USA’s rout of China in the opening round, Carmelo played 14 minutes, when 0-3 from the floor (0-2 [...] |

| At least Renaldo Balkman talks about playing defense.
The Nuggets traded center Marcus Camby in a salary dump and watched as another gritty defender, forward Eduardo Najera, bolted as a free agent. Some observers figured that didn't leave anybody on the Nuggets too excited about playing defense.
Shortly after the losses of Camby and Najera, the Nuggets sought to plug holes in their front line. |

| --When F Carmelo Anthony won a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics, Anthony gave it to his mother Mary, and it's on display in her Baltimore home.
But who gets the gold medal if Anthony brings one home from Beijing?
"Me," said the Nuggets forward. "I'm going to get it."
The quest for gold begins Aug. 10 when Anthony and Team USA begin Olympic play against China.
Following the 2004 disaster, USA Basketball put together a core team. |

The Nuggets trade little used guards Bobby Jones and Taurean Green, and a second round 2010 draft pick to the New York Knicks on Monday, for forward Renaldo Balkman. The Nuggets also got some cash, but gave up the peanuts they acquired in the Marcus Camby trade.

| DRAFT PICKS:
Sonny Weems, G, 6-6, Arkansas -- Athletic swingman the Nuggets will take a look at for the future and who doesn't make a lot of money. That's important for a team well over the luxury tax.
BIGGEST NEEDS: The Nuggets need help up front after center Marcus Camby was traded and Eduardo Najera bolted to New Jersey as a free agent. |
|
|
|
| After the Nuggets unloaded center Marcus Camby in a salary dump, Camby was down in the dumps.
"Blindsided, distraught, disrespected. All those adjectives. I definitely feel insulted," Camby said of being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. "When I first heard about the trade, I felt like I was the scapegoat after all our past first-round exits and failures and lack of defense. |

| --If the Nuggets had fears of some team swooping in to sign restricted free-agent J.R. Smith to a big offer sheet, they can breathe easier.
Smith was asked if he'd heard this summer from any other teams.
"Not yet," he said. "I haven't heard from anybody."
Smith said he hasn't gotten an offer from the Nuggets other than the option to return next season for the $3.04 million qualifying offer. |

| The Denver Nuggets brought back Chris Andersen, signing the frontcourt player known as "Birdman" on Thursday.
Andersen was reinstated by the NBA in early March after being kicked out on Jan. 27, 2006, for violating the league's drug policy.
The 6-foot-10, 228-pound Andersen played in five games for the New Orleans Hornets last season, averaging 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds a game. |

The 6-10, 228-pound Anderson averaged 1.2 points per game and 1.8 rebounds in five games with the Hornets last season.

That’s correct - Chris Andersen, a Nuggets fan-favorite during the 2001-2004 seasons, is returning to the Nuggets via a one-year contract for the league minimum that he signed today.
Chris got his start in the NBA with the Nuggets, and used a combination of raw athleticism and hustle on the court to get playing time. He [...] |

Earlier this week, I had the fortunate timing of catching two-time Denver Nuggets coach Dan Issel on Denver’s local 104.3 The Fan morning radio show. Here are a few gems that I remember from the rambling conversation and the portion of it I heard on the drive to work:
On the 1998 NBA Draft, in which [...] |

| With the Nuggets' payroll for 2008-09 not only exceeding the salary cap but also the luxury-tax threshold, the team made a bold move to gain financial flexibility.
Center Marcus Camby, one season removed from winning the NBA's defensive player of the year award, was dealt to the Clippers for nearly no return. All the Nuggets received was the right to exchange second-round draft picks with the Clippers in 2010.
The deal will save the Nuggets up to $22. |

| Marcus Camby’s six year run as a Denver Nugget came to an end last night with the trade that sent him to the Los Angeles Clippers for a bag of peanuts.
As a fan at least, that’s what this deal feels like and amounts to. In actuality, it gets the Nuggets under the salary cap to [...] |

| The Nuggets have made five straight playoff appearances, but had five straight lopsided first-round exits. But they don't seem ready to panic.
"I talked to coach (George) Karl, and he said they're looking to bring back pretty much the same team as last year," said Nuggets point guard Anthony Carter.
At least Carter will be back. He decided to return to the Nuggets on a one-year, $1.26 million veteran minimum contract. |

|
| --The return of free agent G Anthony Carter to the Nuggets sets up an interesting battle for the starting point guard spot. Carter took over as the starter last season after G Chucky Atkins was injured. Atkins vows to start next season, but Carter is undeterred.
"I'm coming in looking to start, but it's going to be a battle," said Carter, who averaged a surprising 7.8 points and 5.5 assists last season. "Having both of us will give us a lot of firepower. |

| --The Nuggets ended up with a draft choice after all.
The Nuggets, who entered the draft with no picks, dealt a 2009 second-round pick in a three-team deal and got Arkansas swingman Sonny Weems, who had been taken by Chicago No. 39 in the second round.
The 6-foot-6 Weems averaged 15.0 points last season for the Razorbacks. Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien said he's very athletic.
"World class," Warkentien said. |

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Many observers believed guard Allen Iverson would slow down at 32. Instead, he got better. Iverson raised his scoring average from 26.3 to 26.4, which was fourth in the NBA, and his field-goal percentage from 44.2 to 45.8. |

It's no secret what's at the top of Denver's list heading into free agency.
The Nuggets need to solidify their point guard position. It's been a revolving door since Andre Miller was traded to Philadelphia in December 2006 in a deal that landed Allen Iverson.
Chucky Atkins was slated to be the starter last season but missed most of the season because of a groin strain and a sports hernia. |

| All-Star Carmelo Anthony may have found reassurance that the Denver Nuggets still want him around in the most unlikely of places: the courtroom where he pleaded guilty Tuesday to a reduced charge of driving while ability-impaired.
With trade rumors swirling around the beleaguered Anthony in recent weeks, coach George Karl and Mark Warkentien, the team's vice president of basketball operations, were in the courtroom to offer their support. |

| --Nuggets coach George Karl was asked if the team might trade star forward Carmelo Anthony. He didn't rule it out, but said the Nuggets won't be "irrational or out of control in our decision making."
"We know we have a good team," Karl said. "But we also know we're disappointed... We're going to keep all windows of opportunity and windows of advancement and betterment... open. But I don't think we have crazy guys in the front office who are going to do something wild. |

Gary Moore, personal manager for guard Allen Iverson, said the Nuggets "seem to be very willing" to offer Iverson a multi-year contract if he were to opt out of the final year of his current deal by the June 20 deadline.
However, Moore, who said he recently began talks with Denver brass about Iverson's future, declined to discuss how many years the Nuggets might be willing to give Iverson nor offer monetary figures.
Iverson can opt out of a deal paying him $20. |

Not according to his agent.

Andrews left those talks confident the Nuggets are "not shopping" Anthony, who just completed the first year of a five-year, $78.9 million deal. |

Moe, the winningest coach in Nuggets history, said he "most likely" won't be back for a fifth season on Karl's staff.
"At my age, I need to spend more time with the grandkids," Moe said. |
